Good insert spring, Notice it stil has the hooks on the end. This spring clips in the sleeve (the big round thing the shift fork sits in) As the sleeve slides the spring is pushing on the syncro and loading it to speed up the next gear. 
Bad shift spring, notice the hooks are missing. When there is no tension on the insert it doesnt push into the syncro and speed up the next gear, it just goes in instead, never speeds up the gear and grinds.

If you try to push the sleeve with your hand from gear to gear(3 to 4) ect there should be a bit of resistance...
